A client in the developing suburb of Box Hill preempted the need for early learning centres, engaging us to create a modern, innovative facility for the growing community.
Design response
The design process called for creative problem-solving as the site is positioned high on top of a ridge, overlooking Box Hill. To address this, we opted for a single-storey pitched roof that faces the street and two storeys that face the downhill neighbours.
Grouped modules with pitched roofs create a courtyard hidden from view, ensuring ample natural light in each playroom while landscaping maintains privacy and safety. The interiors feature a simple natural colour scheme to highlight the outdoor
Child-centred concept
The design places a strong emphasis on creating an environment tailored to the needs of children. Key features include:
- Street-facing single-storey design that respects the local scale, while the two-storey aspect faces the lower hillside, creating an inviting yet appropriately scaled structure.
- Grouped modules with pitched roofs that surround an internal first-floor courtyard, ensuring each playroom benefits from ample natural light and a sense of openness.
- Extensive use of landscaping and plantings to blend the building with the natural environment, offering a peaceful and engaging setting that also maintains privacy.
Arched vistas frame not just views but childhood wonder, infusing each play space with the elegance of discovery.
Innovative interiors
The interiors were designed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Notable elements include:
- A minimal natural palette that fosters a calm and focused environment, enhancing the children's learning experience.
- Thoughtfully designed joinery and storage solutions to keep the space organized and efficient, ensuring a clutter-free environment for both learning and play.
- Child-friendly and durable furnishings selected to balance comfort and ease of maintenance, supporting an environment where children can thrive.
