Seeking to expand, Robyn Taylor Early Childhood Centre strategically selected a capacious plot adjacent to a revered heritage site for their development endeavour. Through our successful navigation of the Land Environmental Court, the project gained approval by underscoring our commitment to both historical reverence and regulatory compliance.
Design response
The design process was inspired by the architectural vernacular of the neighbouring historic houses.
We focused on ensuring a cohesive spatial experience for both children and visitors—so we designed the split-level ground floor to facilitate a fluid transition from street to outdoor play area.
Child-centred concept
To provide a safe and engaging environment conducive to learning and play:
- We designed the building’s layout to act as an effective acoustic shield.
- We integrated indoor and outdoor play areas on the first floor.
- We ingeniously nestled the outdoor space within the roof structure for privacy—without compromising the charming aesthetic.
- We thoughtfully considered solar orientation to ensure ample natural light throughout.
Arched vistas frame not just views but childhood wonder, infusing each play space with the elegance of discovery.
Innovative interiors
The centre showcases visionary interior design that caters to the needs of three distinct age groups across five playrooms:
- Each age group is distinguished by a bespoke colour palette seamlessly woven into the room's aesthetic fabric.
- Cohesive design elements like timber-look cladding and flooring create visual continuity between spaces.
- Clever storage solutions ensure functionality without sacrificing precious play areas.
