A returning client asked us to design a new purpose-built childcare centre for their expanding portfolio. The site's steep topography presented a challenge: to design a centre that would use its shape as an acoustic barrier.
Design response
We proposed a sympathetic design. By placing all structures along the edges of the site, we created a central courtyard. This was then surrounded by solid shapes to reduce noise from nearby properties. We also took advantage of the site’s natural shape and slope—and incorporated both single and double-storey architectural features and a split-level playground.
Child-centred concept
Our design prioritises the comfort of children, while fostering a sense of connection between indoor and outdoor spaces:
- We placed younger children away from neighbours to reduce noise.
- Ancillary spaces are positioned on the upper level for efficiency.
- Verandahs, greenery-showered colonnades and rooftop plantings create cohesion between architecture and landscape elements.
Arched vistas frame not just views but childhood wonder, infusing each play space with the elegance of discovery.
Innovative interiors
To seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor spaces:
- Angular playroom shapes guide educators and children outside.
- Our design features extensive windows on courtyard-facing walls to connect to the landscape.
