The client, already boasting a portfolio of multiple childcare centres across Sydney, acquired a site that now holds their inaugural multi-storey facility. The centre is a beacon of innovation and thoughtful design, catering for 88 children.
Design response
We focused on creating synergy between context response and client-project ambition.
Our vision breathed new life into the existing structure—to optimise site yield with minimal disruption and maximise children’s engagement with natural elements.
Central to the design is a three-storey atrium that naturally cools and ventilates the space using the venturi effect.
Child-centred concept
To create a safe, healthy and stimulating environment for children:
- Two white blade walls with fixed glazing protect the centre from pollutants and noise coming off Canterbury Road.
- The blade walls also act as a canvas to allow for some relief artwork amidst the busyness.
- Intricate planning ensures each level has ample sunlight, cross-ventilation and independent access to indoor and outdoor play areas.
- Strategically-positioned voids within the play areas maximise winter sunlight exposure, while shade sails offer summer protection.
Central to the design is a three-storey atrium that naturally cools and ventilates the space.
A thoughtfully positioned void that bathes the interior in the winter sun, mitigated by shade sails in the warmer months.
Arched vistas frame not just views but childhood wonder, infusing each play space with the elegance of discovery.
Innovative interiors
We designed the centre to be a microcosm of light, warmth and interaction, with:
- an uplifting communal space, illuminated by a central curvilinear void with a skylight;
- timber elements for warmth and a feel of refined sophistication;
- carefully-placed lounge areas with visual connections between levels.
