An owner-operator of an existing childcare centre approached us with a vision to create another centre—that integrates into the new environment yet still feels familiar.
Design response
The design process seeked to minimise impact on neighbouring properties and ensure an acceptable boundary due to the site’s location.
Situated on a corner lot, the site faces a highway to the north and multi-residential areas to the south and east.
To address this, screened outdoor areas were created to the north, parking to the south, and outdoor areas for babies to the east.
We also fulfilled the client's key request for spacious indoor areas that exceed minimum compliance standards.
Child-centred concept
To create a welcoming, engaging learning environment:
- We designed courtyards and decks to give children access to vegetation even when on upper levels.
- The layout visually connects all rooms to the sky, ensuring ample natural light.
- Indoor rooms are designed to offer natural cross-ventilation and northern exposure with a sustainable approach.
- We used economical finishes like bagged brick and metal cladding to add texture and colour to the children's experience.
Arched vistas frame not just views but childhood wonder, infusing each play space with the elegance of discovery.
Innovative interiors
Our design continues to our commitment to fostering children’s growth and development:
- We used three main textures—whites, greys, and warm timber—to create a neutral backdrop that highlights children's creativity.
- Integrated zones within joinery offer both solitude and group play, promoting autonomy.
- Our design language ensures consistency across centres, providing a familiar environment for child development.
