The design process focused on creating a dynamic spatial experience with aesthetic appeal that facilitates student-teacher and inter-student interaction.
Design overview
With respect to the existing timber structure adorned with historic columns, beams and floors—our design incorporated the following:
- We carved out a curvilinear void in the centre of the building to create visual connections across levels.
- The vertical circulation in the void also created a feeling of activity and interaction in the heart of the building. Plus, it uplifted the existing narrow and dimly-lit corridors.
- We proposed skylights above the void to let soft natural light brighten the lounge spaces.
- We designed all lecture and tutorial rooms to spill out into large lounge areas to encourage interaction.
- To bring in warmth, luxury and sophistication, timber cladding in the central curvilinear void compliments the exposed timber structure.
- Other areas are kept simple, to allow the structure and feature elements to stand out.
